The range of games available for the Xbox 360 is much larger and broader than the range that was produced for the original Xbox. Certainly that system had plenty of good titles to choose from, but in comparison to its closest competitor the PS2, it was a pretty limited selection with only a few Xbox-exclusive titles. The Xbox 360 has, in some ways, usurped the position that the Playstation 2 occupied in the last generation. The PS3 is now the "monster" system with the most powerful hardware and the monolithic appearance, and the Xbox 360 is the slightly smaller but better supported console. The 360 came right out of the gate with a slew of impressive launch titles, most notably the deservedly hyped, industry-defining titan of a game that was Gears of War. There are a considerable number of big-name titles that are exclusive to the Xbox, and as a matter of course it was Sony's new Playstation that had to do the catching up in this round of the fight. The two systems are now on approximately even footing, each with a large array of games available and each with a decent number of system exclusives.
The games available for the Xbox 360 span all genres, from traditional action adventure games, to shooters, roleplaying games, racing and flight simulators, and a number of others, including even a fair selection of real-time strategy games, an unusual phenomenon for a console. In later sections we'll take a closer look at some of these genres and the more noteworthy titles available within those areas. Whatever sort of fun you're looking for, so long as you like to watch it unfold on a screen, it's a guarantee that it can be found on the Xbox 360 in one form or other. |
